He cited: "At Wujiu, the two senior monks Xuan and Shao arrived. Wujiu said, 'Two elder Chan monks, where have you recently departed from?' They said, 'Jiangxi.' Wujiu immediately struck them. A monk said, 'I have long heard that the Upādhyāya has this crucial mechanism.' Wujiu said, 'Since you do not understand, let the second one step forward.' The monk hesitated; Wujiu struck him as well and said, 'In the same pit there is no different earth; go join the hall!'" The Master said, "The eyes of an ancestral teacher must reach such a state; nowadays they flap their wings over the sea of karmic suffering to directly seize and swallow dragons. There is a sort of fellow whose eyes cannot discern east from west, whose staff does not know upside-down, yet who continually speak of illumination and function occurring simultaneously, or taking away both person and environment."
