[The Master] cited: "Guishan asked Yangshan, 'Where have you come from?' Yangshan said, 'From the field.' Guishan said, 'How many people are in the field?' Yangshan stuck his spade into the ground and stood with hands crossed. Guishan said, 'On the South Mountain, many people are cutting thatch.' Yangshan took up the spade and left. Xuansha said, 'If I had seen him at that time, I would have kicked over his spade.' Jingqing said, 'Unable to do anything about the boat, he breaks the bailer.' A monk asked Mingzhao, 'Was the ancient's intent in sticking in the spade, or in crossing the hands?' Zhao called the monk's name; the monk responded. Zhao said, 'Have you ever dreamt of Yangshan?'" The Master said, "The elder masters in all quarters all say the story of sticking in the spade is extraordinary; this is very much like following error and pursuing evil. According to Xuedou's view, when Yangshan was questioned by Guishan, he simply bound himself with grass rope, completely headed for death."
