[The Master] cited: "Xuefeng asked a monk, 'Where have you recently left?' The monk said, 'Fuchuan (Overturned Boat).' Xuefeng said, 'The sea of birth-and-death is not yet crossed; why overturn the boat?'" The Master spoke in the monk's place: "'I have long admired Xuefeng.' Attendant, while the old fellow hesitates, shake your sleeves and walk away! At that time the monk had no words. He returned and recounted this to Fuchuan. Fuchuan said, 'Why did you not say that he has no birth-and-death?' The monk went to Xuefeng again and recounted these words. Xuefeng said, 'These are not your words.' The monk said, 'Fuchuan spoke thus.' Xuefeng said, 'I have twenty blows of the stick to send to Fuchuan, and twenty blows for this old monk to take himself; it does not concern the ācārya.'" The Master said, "Able to distinguish and differentiate, able to kill and bring to life—if you can discern this, you can walk unhindered throughout the world."
