He cited: "Xuefeng instructed the assembly, saying, 'At Wangzhou Pavilion I have already met with you; at Wushi Ridge I have already met with you; in front of the monks' hall I have already met with you.' Baofu asked Ehu, 'Setting aside in front of the monks' hall for a moment, where did they meet at Wangzhou Pavilion and Wushi Ridge?' Ehu took quick strides back to the Abbot's quarters; Baofu then entered the monks' hall." The Master said, "The two old masters—right though they may be, they only know that Xuefeng lets go, but do not see that Xuefeng holds fast. If a patch-robed monk were suddenly to step forward and ask, 'I wonder what Xuedou would do?' would he not be a fellow who discerns the dynamic and recognizes good and ill fortune? Are there any patch-robed monks who have met at Wangzhou Pavilion and Wushi Ridge?" After a long pause he said, "Board-carrying Chan monks are as numerous as hemp seeds and millet grains."
