He cited: "Luopu was an attendant to Linji for a long time. Arriving at Jiashan, he asked, 'Having hastened after your wind from afar, I beg the Master to receive me.' Shan said, 'Before my eyes there is no ācārya; here there is no old monk.' Pu thereupon gave a shout. Shan said, 'Stop, stop, ācārya! Do not be so hasty and hurried. The clouds and moon are the same; streams and mountains are each different. You may well cut off the tongues of everyone in the world, but how can you make a tongueless person understand speech?' Pu had no reply; Shan then struck him." The Master said, "This fellow is pitiful and lamentable; he brought disgrace upon Linji. Since for him clouds and moon are the same, for me streams and mountains are also each different. What talk of a tongueless person not understanding speech? He should have struck Jiashan right in the mouth with his sitting mat! If he were a fellow who knew his bearings, he would certainly have made arrangements beneath the bright window."
