He cited: "The former Baoci asked a monk, 'Where have you recently come from?' The monk said, 'Wolong.' Ci said, 'How long were you there?' The monk said, 'I passed the winter and spent the summer.' Ci said, 'At the Dragon Gate there are no overnight guests; why were you there for so long?' The monk said, 'In the lion's den there are no other beasts.' Ci said, 'Try to make a lion's roar and let me see.' The monk said, 'If I make a lion's roar, then there is no Upādhyāya.' Ci said, 'Thinking of you as a newcomer, I will let you off with thirty blows of the stick.'" The Master said, "Remarkable! Zen worthies, if unfolded evenly, neither harms the other; if judged strictly by authority, both are in peril. Can you still scrutinize it?"
