The Central Peak is deep and cold,
Leaning over to connect with the islands along the sea.
Pines wither on deathless branches;
Flowers are plucked from grass that has yet to sprout.
The flying cascade roars at the flood-dragon's palace;
The secluded trail branches into the bird's path.
As for me, a follower of empty stillness,
My fleeting radiance rests in withered decay.
Drifting through heaven and earth,
Who is there that can be sought out?
Standing alone beyond the clouds and sunset glow,
Who is there that can preserve it for long?
Now the benevolent one has arrived,
Called once again the Elder of Taibai.
With what strategy did you knock on the cliff's bolted gate,
And double the mat to unfold your inner thoughts?
You show me the clarity of the Shang Eulogies;
Cease boasting of the excellence of the Ying songs!
In repaying and presenting [this], I gradually set forth my words,
Though it is difficult to match your fine phrasing.
