The Master said: '"Phrases and non-phrases are like wisteria leaning on a tree." The fragrant bait on the hook is most treacherous. "The ultimate Dao is not difficult, it only dislikes picking and choosing." Worldly people's nests leave nothing to grope for. If one is a patch-robed monk possessing the eye on the crown of the head, one distinguishes clues from three thousand miles away; a lineage master who possesses the forge of an adept has already handed it over before stepping across the ship's rail. Therefore it is said: "Here it is an eighty-year-old grandfather entering the examination hall; it is no child's play—every single one must be a fellow who possesses the true diamond eye to begin with." A fellow with clear eyes has no fixed grooves; merely revealing the slight bit before the eyes, biting away and biting down, sometimes entirely not going, sometimes entirely not staying. If discussing combat, everyone's strength lies in the turn; why speak further of Buddha, speak of patriarch, speak of mind, speak of nature, speak of the mysterious, speak of the subtle, speak of being, or speak of non-being? Under a single stroke of the brush there is only one sword; beneath the sword there is the intention of dividing the body, and also the road of making an emergence. Yet if among you there is one who sheds emotional interpretations, discards medicinal cautions, recognizes dynamics and circumstances, and distinguishes good from ill fortune, try to come forward and speak before the assembly, so that everyone may know it is there. Although it is like this, you must genuinely arrive at this ground to begin with. Dare I ask everyone: is it worldly people's nest, or the fragrant bait on the hook? Do you understand clearly? The view of the ordinary current has already been shed before the eyes; / Outside the rule, you must know the name of an adept.'
