11.22

師云：「言發非聲，和言擊碎，色前不物，與物俱融。聲色翳障全消，聞見之源亦脫，直得淨裸裸赤灑灑，清寥寥白滴滴，一片本地風光，一著本來面目，神通妙用底，縱橫十字，不離田地穩密；田地穩密底，坐斷十方，不離神通妙用。雙明中有雙暗，同生中有同死，恁麼也不得，不恁麼也不得，恁麼也得，不恁麼也得。所以道：『即此見聞非見聞，無餘聲色可呈君。』箇中若了，全無事體用，何妨分不分。箇中見聞是體、聲色是用，聲色是體、見聞是用，分也得、不分也得，所以雲門道：『移燈籠向佛殿裏，拈三門向燈籠上。』若以衲僧正眼覷之，猶為小事，直得納須彌於芥中，擲大千於方外，也只是箇半提。所以盡乾坤大地，都無空闕處，更須知有全提時節，三世諸佛只堪齊立下風，六代祖師只得全身遠害，當機直截一句作麼生道？三尺杖子攪滄波，令彼魚龍知性命。」

The Master said: "Words uttered are not sounds—strike and shatter together with words; objects before colors are not things—merge together with things. The cataracts of sound and form completely dissolve; the source of hearing and seeing is also shed. You directly attain being stripped bare and purely exposed, clear and solitary, pure and gleaming—a patch of local scenery, an expression of the original face. Those of spiritual powers and wondrous function, crosswise and lengthwise, do not depart from the intimacy of the ground; those of the intimacy of the ground cut off the ten directions without departing from spiritual powers and wondrous function. Within double illumination there is double darkness; within dying together there is living together. 'Like this' will not do, 'not like this' will not do; 'like this' will do, 'not like this' will do. Therefore it is said: 'This very seeing and hearing is not seeing and hearing; / There is no further sound or form to present to you, sir.' If you understand within this, it is entirely without substance or function; what harm is there in dividing or not dividing? Within this, seeing and hearing are the substance, sound and form are the function; sound and form are the substance, seeing and hearing are the function. Dividing is fine; not dividing is fine. Therefore Yunmen said: 'Move the lantern into the Buddha hall; pick up the triple gate and put it onto the lantern.' If viewed with the patch-robed monk's correct eye, this is still a minor matter. Even if you place Mount Sumeru into a mustard seed and cast the great trichiliocosm beyond the universe, that is still just a half-presentation. Therefore, throughout heaven and earth and the great earth, there is no empty gap anywhere; you must further know that there is a season of full presentation, when the Buddhas of the three periods can only stand in the lower wind, and the six generations of Patriarchs can only withdraw their whole bodies to keep out of harm's way. Right at the dynamic, how do you say a direct phrase? / A three-foot staff stirs up the dark waves, / Letting those fish and dragons know their life."
