During the Tang dynasty, the ancient worthy Chan Master Ying, when in his humble beginnings, worked in the fields striking clods of earth with a mallet. Seeing a large clod, he playfully struck it hard with the mallet; on the spot it shattered to powder, and suddenly he had a great awakening. From then on, he was unconstrained and unpredictable, manifesting quite a few spiritual wonders. An elder critiqued this, saying, 'The mountains, rivers, and the great earth were smashed to a hundred pieces by this monk's single strike.' Offering to the Buddha does not depend on an abundance of incense—truly, these words are accurate.
