Under the gates of Mount Jiang, there is no Chan to speak of and no Way to transmit. Although half a thousand patch-robed monks are gathered, there are only the diamond cage and chestnut burr: those who jump, jump with effort; those who swallow, swallow with intent—do not blame them for having no flavor or being too steep. If you suddenly realize it, it will be like returning home in embroidered robes by day; thousands of people will only look up in admiration, yet searching for where it came from, they cannot find it. This is what is called everyone's fundamental lot; the moment you give rise to thoughts to take it up and shoulder it, it is already no longer the fundamental lot. Even if ten thousand workings cease and the thousand sages do not guide you, there is still something to rely on. You must quickly shake it off and break through to the other side; therefore it is said: 'If there is a fine hair, that is already dust; the moment an intention is raised, one is disturbed by demons.' To accomplish everything is entirely up to it; to destroy everything is also entirely up to it. Rare and wonderful conditions, treasuries of merits like sands of the Ganges, immeasurable wondrous adornments, and rare matters transcending the world are all accomplished by it; stinginess, greed, hatred, jealousy, emotional consciousness, clinging, the conditioned, the defiled, the impure and confused, paths of intellectual understanding, names and marks, views and deluded thoughts are all destroyed by it. Only it can turn all things, and all things cannot turn it; though it has no form or face, it encompasses the ten directions of emptiness and contains the ordinary and nourishes the sage. If one grasps it, one immediately falls into the thorn of views, ultimately unable to grope for it.
