15.38

馬大師嘗舉：「《楞伽經》以佛語心為宗，無門為法門。」乃云：「諸人要識佛語心麼？只爾如今語便是心，心便是佛。故云佛語心乃是宗也，此宗無門乃是法門。」古人太殺老婆、拕泥涉水；若一舉便透，猶較些子，或窮研義理，卒摸索不著。

Great Master Ma once quoted: 'The Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra takes the words of the Buddha as its source, with gatelessness as the Dharma gate.' Then he said: 'Do you people want to know the mind spoken of by the Buddha? Just your speaking right now is the mind, and the mind is the Buddha. Therefore it says that the mind spoken of by the Buddha is the source, and that this source is gateless is the Dharma gate.' The ancients were exceedingly grandmotherly, wading through mud and water. If you penetrate at a single mention, that is somewhat better; but if you thoroughly investigate doctrines and principles, in the end you will never grope your way to it.
