17.20

舉：「古者道：『十五日已前不得住我這裏，爾若住我這裏，我用錐錐爾，十五日已後不得離我這裏，爾若離我這裏，我用鉤鉤爾。』正當十五日，且道：『用錐即是？用鉤即是？』」師拈云：「放行處把住，把住處放行，是則是為人鉗鍵，爭奈傷鋒犯手。若是崇寧則不然，十五日已前不得住我這裏，爾若住我這裏，我放火燒爾；十五日已後不得離我這裏，爾若離我這裏，我放火燒爾；正當十五日，化為萬斛明珠，撒在大千沙界，處處盡放光明，各各急須著眼。」

[The Master] cited: "An ancient said, 'Before the fifteenth day, you may not abide here with me; if you abide here with me, I will pierce you with an awl. After the fifteenth day, you may not leave here from me; if you leave here from me, I will hook you with a hook.' Right on the fifteenth day, tell me: is using the awl right, or is using the hook right?"
The Master critiqued it, saying, "Holding fast at the place of letting go, letting go at the place of holding fast—granted, this is pincers and keys for people, but what can be done about wounding the blade and injuring the hand? Were it Chongning, it would not be so: Before the fifteenth day, you may not abide here with me; if you abide here with me, I will set fire to burn you. After the fifteenth day, you may not leave here from me; if you leave here from me, I will set fire to burn you. Right on the fifteenth day, it transforms into ten thousand bushels of bright pearls, scattered across the great chiliocosm sand-worlds; everywhere radiates brilliant light, and each and every one must urgently fix their eyes on it!"
