17.26

舉：「雲門示眾云：『結夏得數日也，寒山子作麼生？』大溈真如道：『結夏得數日也，水牯牛作麼生？』」師拈云：「結夏得數日也，諸上座作麼生？」復云：「寒山子意在鉤頭，水牯牛事在函蓋，且道：諸上座落在什麼處？惜取眉毛。」

[The Master] cited: "Yunmen instructed the assembly, saying: 'The summer retreat has been underway for several days. How is Master Hanshan doing?' Dagui Zhenru said: 'The summer retreat has been underway for several days. How is the water buffalo doing?'"
The Master critiqued: "The summer retreat has been underway for several days. How are you venerable elders doing?" He also said: "Master Hanshan's intention is at the tip of the hook; the water buffalo's affair is in the box and lid. But tell me: where do you venerable elders end up? Spare your eyebrows!"
