17.44

舉：「僧問投子：『如何是一大事因緣？』子云：『尹司空與老僧開堂。』」師拈云：「人道投子實頭，不妨忒殺淳朴。若是山僧即不然，或有問：『如何是一大事因緣？』只對他道：『弄潮須是弄潮人。』」

He cited: "A monk asked Touzi, 'What is the causes and conditions of the one great matter?' Touzi said, 'Minister of Works Yin opened the hall for this old monk.'"
The Master critiqued this, saying, "People say Touzi was honest and plain; he was indeed excessively simple. If it were this mountain monk, it would not be so. If someone were to ask, 'What is the causes and conditions of the one great matter?', I would only tell him, 'To ride the tide, one must be a tide-rider.'"
