18.11

舉：「懶瓚和尚云：『吾有一言，絕慮忘緣，巧說不得，只要心傳。』」師拈云：「這老漢，魚行水濁，漏逗不少。雖然如是，箇中或有解忘緣能絕慮者出來道：『作麼生是心傳？』若也會得，已傳了也；若會不得，心即且置，畢竟是那箇一言？歸堂歇去。」

He brought up [the following case]: "Venerable Lanzan said: 'I have a single word that cuts off thought and forgets conditions; it cannot be skillfully spoken, but only requires mind transmission.'" The Master commented: "This old fellow—where fish move, the water becomes muddy; leaks and blunders are not few. Even so, if there is one among you who can forget conditions and cut off thought, stepping forward to say, 'What is mind transmission?'—if you understand, it has already been transmitted; if you do not understand, setting mind aside for a moment, ultimately what is that single word? Return to the hall and rest."
