18.13

舉：「僧問大梅：『如何是祖師西來意？』梅云：『西來無意。』僧舉似鹽官，官云：『一箇棺木，兩箇死漢。』雪竇云：『三箇也有。』」師拈云：「一串穿却。」

He brought up [the following case]: "A monk asked Damei: 'What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?' Damei said: 'Coming from the West, there is no meaning.' The monk recounted this to Yanguan. Yanguan said: 'One coffin, two dead fellows.' Xuedou said: 'There are even three.'" The Master commented: "Pierced through on a single string."
