18.27

舉：「德山小參示眾云：『老僧今夜不答話，問話者三十棒。』時有僧出禮拜，德山便打，僧云：『某甲話也未問，為什麼打某甲？』德山云：『爾是甚處人？』僧云：『新羅人。』山云：『未跨船舷，好與三十棒。』法眼云：『大小德山，話作兩橛。』圓明云：『大小德山，龍頭蛇尾。』雪竇云：『德山握閫外威權，有當斷不斷不招其亂底劍，要識新羅僧，只是撞著露柱底瞎漢。』」

He cited: "Deshan instructed the assembly at an informal gathering, saying: 'Tonight this old monk will not answer questions. Anyone who asks a question gets thirty blows of the staff.' At that time, a monk came forward and bowed. Deshan struck him at once. The monk said, 'I have not even asked a question; why do you strike me?' Deshan said, 'Where are you from?' The monk said, 'A man of Silla.' Deshan said, 'Before you even stepped over the ship's gunwale, you deserved thirty blows.' Fayan said, 'Great or small, Deshan severed his talk into two pieces.' Yuanming said, 'Great or small, Deshan had a dragon's head and a snake's tail.' Xuedou said, 'Deshan held the authority outside the borders; he had the sword of not hesitating when one ought to sever, which brings about no disorder. If you want to know that monk from Silla, he was merely a blind fellow who collided with an exposed pillar.'"
