18.81

舉：「雲門問僧云：『古佛與露柱相交，是第幾機？』僧無語，門云：『爾問，我與爾道。』僧遂問，門云：『一條縚三十文。』僧云：『如何是一條縚三十文？』門云：『打與。』代前語云：『南山起雲，北山下雨。』」

[Yuanwu] brought up: "Yunmen asked a monk, 'When an ancient Buddha and an exposed pillar intermingle, which dynamic is it?' The monk was speechless. Yunmen said, 'You ask, and I will tell you.' The monk then asked. Yunmen said, 'A single cord is thirty cash.' The monk said, 'What does "a single cord is thirty cash" mean?' Yunmen said, 'Give him a beating.' On the monk's behalf, he substituted the earlier response: 'Clouds rise from the southern mountain; rain falls on the northern mountain.'"
