19.19

舉：「僧問鏡清：『新年頭還有佛法也無？』清云：『有。』僧云：『如何是新年頭佛法？』清云：『元正啟祚。』僧云：『謝師答話。』清云：『鏡清今日失利。』又僧問智門明教：『新年頭還有佛法也無？』教云：『無。』僧云：『年年是好年，日日是好日，為什麼却無？』教云：『張公喫酒李公醉。』僧云：『老老大大，龍頭蛇尾。』教云：『明教今日失利。』」

[Yuanwu] brought up: "A monk asked Jingqing, 'Is there still Buddhadharma at New Year's or not?' Jingqing said, 'There is.' The monk said, 'What is the Buddhadharma of New Year's?' Jingqing said, 'The first day brings beginning prosperity.' The monk said, 'Thank you, Master, for answering the question.' Jingqing said, 'Today Jingqing suffered a defeat.' Another monk asked Zhiman of Mingjiao, 'Is there still Buddhadharma at New Year's or not?' Mingjiao said, 'There is not.' The monk said, 'Every year is a good year, and every day is a good day; why is there none?' Mingjiao said, 'Mr. Zhang drinks wine, and Mr. Li gets drunk.' The monk said, 'Old and venerable as you are, you have a dragon's head and a snake's tail.' Mingjiao said, 'Today Mingjiao suffered a defeat.'"
