20.151

三十年行道，海上第一人，颯然恁麼去，唯見不酸辛。雖然如是，須知佛眼未曾生、未曾死，未曾去、未曾來。正與麼時如何？乃指龕云：「我與雪峯同條生，不與雪峯同條死，要知末後句分明，普請大眾齊聲舉。」乃云：「哀哀。」

For thirty years practicing the Way, the foremost person on the seas; / suddenly departing thus, one sees only that it is not bitter. / Although this is so, you must know that Foyan was never born and never died, never went and never came. At just such a time, how is it? Pointing to the casket, he said: 'I was born on the same bough as Xuefeng, but I do not die on the same bough as Xuefeng. If you wish to know the final phrase clearly, I invite the entire assembly to raise it in one voice.' He then said, 'Alas! Alas!'
