6.23

上堂云：「靈山話月，語密難藏，曹溪指月，心真莫測。倒却門前剎竿著，已落第二頭。金剛階下蹲，神龜火裏走，猶落第三首。只如未有佛祖已前，還有恁麼時節麼？到這裏不論懵底，唯是俊流。還委悉麼？巨浪湧千尋，澄波不離水。」

Ascending the hall, [the Master] said: "At Gṛdhrakūṭa speaking of the moon, the words were esoteric and hard to conceal; at Caoxi pointing to the moon, the mind was authentic and unfathomable. Knocking down the flagpole in front of the gate has already fallen into the second head; crouching beneath the diamond steps, the sacred tortoise walking within fire, still falls into the third category. What about before there were Buddhas and ancestral masters—was there still such a season? Arriving here, ignorant folks are not discussed; it is solely for the sharp and talented. Do you clearly understand? Giant waves surge a thousand fathoms, yet the clear ripples do not leave the water."
