7.13

上堂云：「古者道：『結夏得十一日也，寒山子作麼生？』又道：『結夏得十一日也，水牯牛作麼生？』山僧即不然，結夏得十一日也，燈籠露柱作麼生？若透得燈籠露柱，即識水牯牛；若識得水牯牛，即見寒山子。忽若擬議，老僧在爾脚底。」

Ascending the hall, he said: "An ancient said, 'Eleven days into the summer retreat, how is it with Master Hanshan?' He also said, 'Eleven days into the summer retreat, how is it with the water buffalo?' This mountain monk is not like that: eleven days into the summer retreat, how is it with the lantern and the exposed pillar? If you can penetrate through the lantern and the exposed pillar, then you will recognize the water buffalo; if you recognize the water buffalo, then you will see Master Hanshan. If you hesitate in deliberation, this old monk is under your feet."
