Ascending the hall, a monk asked, "'Free from the four propositions and cut off from the hundred negations, please, Master, point directly to the meaning of the Western Coming'—why did Great Master Ma not speak it to him?" The Master said, "The ācārya certainly possesses the eye." The monk continued, "Zhizang said, 'Go ask Brother Hai.' How about that?" The Master said, "There are thorns in the soft mud." "Baizhang said, 'I do not understand when it comes to this point.' What is the meaning?" The Master said, "A turtle drills through a wall." The monk continued, "Mazu said, 'Zang's head is white, Hai's head is black.' How about that?" The Master said, "The general's order beyond the frontier." The monk continued, "As for these three venerables, were they answering his talk, or were they speaking for him?" The Master said, "Accepted under one indictment." The monk continued, "'Words carry the mystery without revealing it; the mouth wishes to speak, yet words fail.'" The Master said, "There are still these entanglements." The monk continued, "What if the manifold flows are cut off, not touching verbal explanations?" The Master said, "Wait for me to go up the mountain to gather a staff." The monk said, "One cannot deceive this old venerable even a bit." The Master said, "Letting you pass one move." The Master then said, "A fine day has much in common, several colors in one match. Spreading brocade with flowers, completely penetrating inside and outside—if you are a knower of the tone, there is no further need for explanation. Assembly! The Buddhas of the three periods turn the great dharmacakra within the flames; walls, tiles, and rubble turn the great dharmacakra within everyone's eyes; the staff turns the great dharmacakra on the crowns of the heads of the thousand sages; only the open pillar and the lantern are somewhat better. Why? Going east, one does not see the benefit of going west; when a single leaf falls, autumn throughout all under heaven is known."
