9.11

示眾云：「德山小參不答話，打鎖敲枷；趙州小參要答話，將杖探水。崇寧今夜也不管答話，亦不管不答話，偶然向衣單下，拾得箇千年桃核，舉似大眾。」乃橫拄杖云：「爾諸人若也恁麼，坐斷天下人舌頭。」復以拄杖卓地云：「爾諸人若也恁麼，入地獄如箭射。且道利害在什麼處？若不同床臥，焉知被底穿。」

He instructed the assembly, saying: "At Deshan's informal gatherings he did not answer questions—breaking locks and smashing cangues; at Zhaozhou's informal gatherings he wished to answer questions—taking a staff to sound the water. Chongning tonight neither cares about answering questions nor cares about not answering questions. By chance, from under my robes, I picked up a thousand-year-old peach stone to present to the great assembly." Then, holding his staff horizontally, he said: "If you all are like this, you will cut off the tongues of everyone under heaven." Again he tapped the staff on the ground and said: "If you all are like this, you will enter hell as swiftly as an arrow shot from a bow. Tell me: where do the benefit and harm lie? If one does not sleep in the same bed, how can one know that the quilt is worn through underneath?"
