Ascending the hall, a monk asked, "When words do not unfold the matter and speech does not accord with the dynamic, how does one understand?"
The Master said, "Before the question was asked, a hundred fragments."
[The monk] continued, "In that case, only the old barbarian is allowed to know it."
The Master said, "You cannot grope for it."
[The monk] continued, "Even if a thousand sages came forth, they could not grope for it either."
The Master said, "Your eyes bulge out."
Then [the Master] said: "It is not a phenomenon before one's eyes, nor is it a mechanism outside the mind. Directly underfoot, all acceptance is severed; before the sun, there is neither facing nor turning away. When one place is bright, hundreds and thousands of places shine; when one word gets through, hundreds and thousands of words penetrate freely. Not mind, not Buddha—toss it to one side; citing the past, citing the present—cast it all into one place. Right in your own share, can you verify it? If you can verify it, the Buddhas of the three periods attain the Way within it, spiritual penetrations and transformations flow forth from within it, the great earth, mountains, and rivers manifest within it, and the nine classes and four kinds of birth are nurtured within it. And what is the single phrase that encompasses all existing things? / In the coming year there will still be new branches, / Disrupting the spring breeze without end. / Descended from the seat."
