Ascending the hall, a monk asked, "In the entire canon of the great teachings, which is the head?"
The Master said, "Thus have I heard."
The monk continued, "This is Ānanda's; what is the Venerable's?"
The Master said, "The mountain monk uses it with great swiftness."
He then said, "When a single word accords with the Way, everywhere is real; when a single phrase is without partiality, it fully manifests the precious seal. It was good that he asked, and not asking would have been extraordinary; the blazing, glorious light fundamentally has neither front nor back. Therefore it is said: 'In the boundless sea of lands, self and other are not separated by the tip of a hair; throughout the ten periods of past and present, beginning and end do not move from the present thought.' Where there is no separation, the ten directions altogether are the true realm; where there is no moving, the ten periods are strung together before one's eyes. Pure and naked, stripping away dust and emotion; bare and exposed, without concealment or cover—it directly brings about the identical course of the thousand sages and the sudden response of myriad dynamic workings. Do you still understand? The silk line on the tip of the pole is left to your play; not disturbing the clear waves, its intent is naturally distinct." He stepped down from the seat.
