Ascending the hall, a monk asked, "How do you speak the phrase of entering the gate?"
The Master said, "Lured one onto the hook."
The monk continued, "What about swallowing the myriad phenomena?"
The Master said, "A holeless iron mallet."
The monk continued, "The student has lost the advantage today."
The Master said, "Two or three drops grieve a person to death."
He then said, "Seen face to face, even in a sage there is still a defect; as soon as one traverses passes and crossings, white clouds stretch for ten thousand li. At the place of genuine truth, it is inconceivable; at the place of dense intimacy, it is identical with the true limit. Barring the world without a single hair's breadth leaking through, how do you speak a phrase of free detachment? Walking on one foot on a peak ten thousand fathoms high." He stepped down from the seat.
