Requested for an informal gathering by Practitioner Xiu: "Heaven and earth share the same root with me, and their root is deep and firm; the ten thousand things are of one body with me, and their body is void and congealed. The root of the ten thousand things spans past and present; the firm and solid body encompasses all existence. If one grasps the meaning by a minute hair's breadth, one can turn iron into gold and transform the ordinary into the sagely; in accordance with principle and in accordance with phenomena, just where one is, right there is truth; when not a single thought arises, the limits before and after are severed. Therefore it is said: 'The power of inconceivable liberation: its wondrous functions are like the sands of the Ganges, also boundless.' If one speaks of wondrous function, it can smash the mountain of karma, drain dry the ocean of suffering, repent sins that cannot be repented, untie grievances that cannot be untied, raise up illnesses that must lead to death, and realize the patience with the non-arising of dharmas. Just at such a moment, how do you say a phrase that establishes no merit? Do you still understand? In a dark room of a thousand years, a single lamp dispels it; the errors and faults of ten thousand kalpas are eliminated by a single phrase." A verse says: "When Ajāta[śatru] was afflicted with illness, he took refuge in the Sovereign of Enlightenment; / The Regulator, extending compassion, released the moonlight. / The efficacy of the Dharma medicine is equal to the power of the Buddha; / Naturally, the body's sickness attained coolness."
