At an informal gathering [the Master said]: “The single move directly facing the sun—the thousand sages cannot catch sight of it; the single dynamic at the face-gate—expert masters are helpless. ‘Like this, like this; not like this, not like this’—cast them to one side; applying the staff and applying the shout, the spark struck from flint and the flash of lightning—let that move pass. Right at such a time, not a drop of water leaks through, heaven and earth are cut off; having eyes, it cannot be seen; having ears, it cannot be heard; having a mouth, it cannot be distinguished; having a mind, it cannot be thought. Even if the entire body is eyes, and throughout heaven, earth, the great earth, grasses, trees, and monastic groves, fine and coarse, long and short are each and every one interwoven, performing measureless, boundless supernatural powers and wondrous functions—arriving here, they are not worth a single needle-prick. And tell me: possessing what principle is it so extraordinary, so straightforward, able to cut off like this? Clean and naked, stripped bare and free, the whole body exclusively exposed—then you can shoulder it, walk through, and penetrate out; the Buddhas of the three periods, the patriarchs of the six generations, down to the old venerable monks throughout the world can only swallow their breath, hold their tongues, stare with eyes wide, and gape with mouths open. Although this is so, right now, what are all of you doing here? What can this mountain monk base his words on to be right? True though it is, it is exceedingly contrary to human sentiment; I cannot avoid opening a line of path. Do you still understand in detail? The four seas are now clear as a mirror; the curved rainbow's upright vapor penetrates the blue sky.”
