The Patriarchs' gate points straight and direct; how could there be so many winding tracks? It only values transcendent people who, upon barely hearing it raised, perk up their eyebrows and walk on; from the vantage of the clear-sighted, [anything less] is mere clumsiness. An ancient said, "If I raise one corner and he does not return with the other three, I do not go on with him." Each and every one must raise one and understand three, discerning the dynamic down to grains and ounces, flowing and unobstructed like a rolling wheel, swift and sharp—only then is it called upholding [the Dharma]. Have you not seen how Liangsui met Magu? The first time, as soon as they met, [Magu] went back to the Abbot's quarters and closed the door. When he went to see him a second time, Magu strode quickly toward the vegetable garden; Liangsui then had a sudden flash of insight, and so he said to Magu, "Venerable Sir, do not deceive Liangsui. If Liangsui had not come to see the Venerable Sir, he would have been cheated his whole life through by the twelve scrolls of scriptures and treatises." Looking at him in such a way, it was truly effortless. When he returned, he said to his followers, "Where everyone knows, Liangsui completely knows; where Liangsui knows, no one knows." Truly know that where he knew, not a breath of wind could pass; people will never easily catch up to it. He can indeed be called a true lion cub. If you want to be seed and sprout of his house, you must surpass him by a head before you succeed.
