Perfect clarity, empty and congealed, is the substance of the Way; expanding and contracting, killing and bringing to life, is the wondrous function. Skilled in wielding the blade, able to hold fast, like a pearl rolling in a basin, like a basin rolling with a pearl, not falling into emptiness for an instant, nor distinguishing worldly dharma from Buddha-Dharma, directly fused into one piece: this is the so-called 'encountering Him at every turn,' appearing and disappearing freely, originally without external objects, stark naked and turning smoothly, sealed by the fundamental lot, bright upon every matter, clear upon every object—where else could gain and loss, right and wrong, good and bad, long and short come from? One only fears that one's own correct eye has not yet been thoroughly clarified, thereby causing one to fall into the two extremes, in which case there is no connection. Have you not seen Yongjia say: 'A superior person resolves it once and for all; the middling and inferior hear much and mostly disbelieve'?
