Generally speaking, as a kalyāṇamitra, one should be compassionate, gentle, and compliant, dealing with beings equitably and abiding without dispute. If another approaches me with evil demands, evil reputations, or forms, interfering unreasonably with slander and humiliation, just step back and reflect on yourself; if within yourself there is no dissatisfaction, do not contest anything at all, nor stir thoughts of resentment, but directly cut it off, as if initially neither hearing nor seeing it, and after a long time the demonic obstacles will naturally dissolve. If you contend with them, evil voices will return to each other; how could there ever be an end? Moreover, it would not manifest your own power—how would you differ from the ordinary run? Strive earnestly to practice this, and naturally none will think of disobeying. Awakening humans and devas beneath the gavel and whisk, causing them to break through life and death—how could this be a small cause and condition? You should use serene words and countenance, meeting and testing according to the dynamic, discerning their origins, examining their stances, attacking their biases, stripping away their attachments, and pointing directly to let them see the Buddha-nature and reach the realm of great rest, cessation, peace, and joy. This is what is called pulling out nails, drawing out pegs, releasing stickiness, and removing bindings. You must never bind people with real dharmas, causing them to dwell like this or cling like this; do not let yourself be shifted or toppled by others. This is poison: if you let them consume it, they will carry a board and be misled their whole life—how could there be any benefit?
