The lineage style of the ancestral teachers has vast and far-reaching strides, towering far above the scriptural teachings, holding up solely the authentic seal. At Vulture Peak a flower was held up, and Mahākāśyapa smiled in acceptance; Nāgārjuna showed a circle-mark, and Āryadeva hit the mark; at Shaolin the mind was sought, and the Second Patriarch supernormally realized it; Elder Lu spoke a verse, and Daman transmitted the robe and bowl. People all consider these secret transmissions, but investigating their origins, they are merely admissions of defeat. How could the profoundly ultimate purport of the wonder of the Way stop at just this? One must make it like the height of heaven, the thickness of earth, the depth of the ocean, and the breadth of empty space—yet that does not even approximate it. Believe that a person of excessive great liberation turns heaven and rotates earth, sucks the oceans dry, shouts empty space into dispersion, exerts the great potential and reveals the great function. Outside the floating-banner realms of the boundless fragrant waters of the sea, they cut through the net of views of demons and non-Buddhists, destroy the provisional transformations of buddhas and ancestors, and bring forth the unrevealable and hold up the unmentionable secret. Yet even this is not hitting the mark—then Xuefeng's attaining the Way at Aoshan and Yunyan's knowing nothing of it from beginning to end are merely idle chatter. One must forge a heart and liver of pig iron and possess the method of killing people without blinking an eye; only then can one slightly reveal the style and guidelines. Treasuring the wisdom-life so that it flows endlessly—only this somewhat accords with one's wishes.
