[The Master] cited: "The two senior monks Xuan and Shao went to see Wujiu. Wujiu asked: 'Where did you leave recently?' The monk said: 'Jiangxi.' Wujiu immediately struck him. The monk said: 'I had long heard that the Master had this dynamic essential.' Wujiu said: 'Since you do not understand, let the second one come forward.' That monk was bewildered. Wujiu struck him as well, saying: 'The same pit has no different dirt. Go to the sangha hall.' Xuedou said: 'The eyes of a lineage master must be like this—like a garuḍa parting the ocean to seize and swallow dragons directly. There is a sort of fellow whose eyes do not distinguish east from west, who does not know upside-down from right-side-up with his staff, and only talks of simultaneous illumination and function, or depriving both person and environment.'" The Master said: "Xuedou clearly distinguished past and present and discriminated between the heterodox and the orthodox. If he did not know it was there, how could he speak like this? Even so, you have only seen Wujiu letting go; do you want to understand where Wujiu holds fast? Even Śākyamuni and Maitreya would be his runners. Acting in accordance with the command, everyone on the whole earth must take a beating from the staff."
