[The Master] cited: "Nanquan instructed the assembly, saying, 'Last night Mañjuśrī and Samantabhadra gave rise to views of Buddha and views of Dharma; each was given twenty blows of the staff and banished to the two Iron Enclosing Mountains.' Zhaozhou stepped forward and said, 'Whom does the Venerable make take the blows of the staff?' Nanquan said, 'What fault does Old Master Wang have?' Zhaozhou made a prostration, and Nanquan returned to the abbot's quarters."
The Master critiqued it, saying, "Nanquan touched the strings, and Zhaozhou recognized the tune. Bitter pain, blue sky! Hanshan and Shide! Were it Chongning, it would not be so: 'Last night the lanterns and bare pillars gave rise to views of Buddha and views of Dharma; each was given twenty blows of the staff and ordered to return to their original places.' Should someone step forward and say, 'Whom does the Venerable make take the blows of the staff?' I would simply tell him, 'Falling into guest, falling into host.'"
