[The Master] cited: "A monk asked Mazu, 'What is the meaning of the Patriarch coming from the West?' The Patriarch said, 'Come closer, and I will tell you.' The monk stepped forward, and the Patriarch slapped him right across the ear, saying, 'Six ears do not plan together.' Later, Chan Master Nan said, 'The ancient still said six ears do not plan together; how can two or three hundred people discuss it noisily in a tumult? A disaster, a disaster!'"
The Master critiqued it, saying, "Chan Master Nan made use of the wind to blow the fire, but still could not avoid generating interpretations following words. Were someone to ask Daolin, 'What is the meaning of the Patriarch coming from the West?' I would simply say to him, 'When the water rises the boat is high; when there is much mud the Buddha is big.'"
