He cited: "When the Venerable Xuansha arrived at Putian County, the multitude welcomed him with hundred-act spectacles. The next day, Xuansha asked Senior Monk Xiaotang, 'Where did all that clamour of yesterday go?' Xiaotang lifted the corner of his kāṣāya to show him. Xuansha said, 'Vainly flung about, with no connection whatsoever.' Dagui Zhenru critiqued this, saying, 'Dagui would not do so. If someone asked, "Where did all that clamour of yesterday go?" I would simply snap my fingers once. If a patch-robed monk came forth and said, "Vainly flung about, with no connection whatsoever," Dagui would instead approve of him. Why? A great fellow stroking the tiger's whiskers is also part of his fundamental lot. But tell me: where do the gains and losses lie?'"
The Master critiqued this, saying, "Although the two elder masters raised and invigorated the lineage essentials, they were still greedy to gaze at the moon in the sky. If someone were now to come forth and ask Daolin, 'Where did all that clamour just now go?', I would only tell him, 'Starting over from the beginning again.' If he said, 'Vainly flung about, with no connection whatsoever,' I would strike him with a staff right across the back. Why? 'If the waves of Caoxi are like this, / Countless ordinary people are drowned on dry land.'"
