He cited: "One night when there were no lamps or candles, Yaoshan instructed the assembly, saying, 'I have a phrase; wait until the bull gives birth to a calf, and then I will speak it for you.' At that time a monk came forward and said, 'The bull has already given birth to a calf; it is just that the Venerable does not speak.' Yaoshan said, 'Bring a lamp!' The monk then returned to the assembly. Dongshan said, 'This monk understands, yet he just refuses to prostrate.' Fadeng said, 'At that time he should not have asked for a lamp; he should just have asked him, "Is the newborn a bull calf or a heifer calf?"' He also spoke in his place: 'Twins were born!'"
The Master critiqued this, saying, "Yaoshan cast the line with his intent on the leviathan; this monk swallowed the hook, stirring three thousand waves. Dongshan's eye was correct, sharing the same wind across a thousand miles; Fadeng rearranged spears and banners, once more donning armour and helmet. Even though it is like this, this mountain monk would not do so. Jiashan had a phrase: before King of Majestic Voice, he had already spoken it for everyone. If someone asks, 'Does it accord in the light, or does it accord in the dark?', I would only tell him, 'When the dragon gets water, its spirit increases; / When the tiger meets mountain heights, its fierce terror grows.'"
