He cited: "Grand Master Lu Geng asked Nanquan, 'Dharma Master Zhao said, "Heaven and earth share the same root with me; the myriad things are of one substance with me." That is also quite extraordinary.' Nanquan pointed to a flower in front of the courtyard and called to the Grand Master, saying, 'People of today see this flower as if in a dream.'"
The Master critiqued this, saying, "Lu Geng's hands grasped the golden lock; Nanquan opened it wide in the shape of the character eight, so that the seven treasures and eight jewels were arrayed before their eyes." He then held up his whisk and said, "'Heaven and earth are one finger; the myriad things are one horse.' The whole body is an eye, defying all explanation."
