He cited: "One day Śāriputra was entering the city when he saw the maiden Candrottarā leaving the city. Śāriputra asked, 'Where are you going?' The maiden said, 'I am going just as Śāriputra goes.' Śāriputra said, 'I have just entered the city and you have just left the city; why do you say that you are going just as Śāriputra goes?' The maiden said, 'Where should the disciples of the buddhas abide?' Śāriputra said, 'The disciples of the buddhas should abide in great nirvāṇa.' The maiden said, 'Since the disciples of the buddhas abide in great nirvāṇa, I am going just as Śāriputra goes.'" The Master commented: "Abiding nowhere to abide, walking nowhere to walk, seeing nothing to be seen, functioning nowhere to function—beneath each person's heels it is vast as the great void, like ten suns shining together, radiant wherever they touch. If you understand thus, then together with the maiden Candrottarā you will realize non-arising and attain non-retrogression; wherever you go or come, everything is within the great liberation. The nostrils of the buddhas of the three periods are pierced in a single instant; what talk is there of going just as Śāriputra goes?"
