Ascending the hall, a monk asked, "What is the meaning of Mount Sumeru?" The master said, "Pushing it forward cannot move it; holding it back cannot retreat it." The monk continued, "I wonder, is there still any fault?" The master said, "It sits upon your tongue." [The monk] asked, "Dharmas do not arise alone; relying on conditions they come to be." Raising his sitting mat, he said, "This is the condition; what is the Dharma?" The master said, "Yet the spear has been snatched away by the ācārya." The monk continued, "Why does the Venerable retreat and yield to others today?" The master said, "There is only the vanguard, no rearguard." The monk asked, "I wonder, what is the rearguard?" The master said, "Give me back my topic of words!" Then he said, "One whose ground is secure and hidden cannot lift his feet, and pokes his head out too far; one of supernatural powers and wondrous functioning cannot plant his feet, and his body's withdrawal cannot turn around. Even if freely crossing in all directions, receiving three thousand blows in the morning, it would still fall short by a little bit. And tell me: where is the error? If you know it is there, only then will you see the full presentation and the half presentation. If you do not yet know, you are an old crow in a sack—though alive, just as if dead." He stepped down from the seat.
