A loyal minister does not fear death, hence he can establish the great affairs of the world; a brave warrior disregards his life, hence he can achieve great fame in the world. When patch-robed monks penetrate and escape birth and death, fearing neither peril nor ruin, they can establish the discipline and order of the buddhas and ancestors. Master Zhaojue's dynamic sharpness was towering and steep, his wisdom and eloquence flooding the heavens; under his elbow he held the tally, and on the crown of his head he possessed the eye. He wielded the spirit of shouting away the white clouds, and brandished the pincers and hammer that smash through empty space. Once returning to the Brocade City, twice dwelling in mighty monasteries, he cleaved open the thorny path and cut off the pass of right and wrong, receiving beings and benefiting life, glorifying the sun of the Buddha. At the crossroads, with a single move, he shook himself free and walked off, surpassing the past and illuminating the future, straight from head to tail. Now that he has arrived here, worldly conditions may be called complete; at the very end, diligently cut off—the road ahead is a heap of raging fire. Great assembly, tell me: where, ultimately, does he go? Raising the torch, he said: 'Raging flames reaching to the sky cannot detain him; / the precious moon in the midst of the sky remains eternally round.'
