In former days Linji dispatched a general / To test Dejiao's carrying out of the decree: / Seizing him fast, he gave him a thrust, / Truly distinguishing the sounding pole and shadow grass. / Three times the National Teacher called, / And at each sound there was nothing he did not take in; / "You failing me, or me failing you"—such dynamic sharpness / Directly penetrates the crown of a thousand sages' heads. / The ancients once served as incense-attendants, / Their capacity and vessels alert like this. / You have served with towel and pitcher for several years, / And should yourself have attained the correct destiny. / Now, returning from the imperial capital, / You will travel straight into the realm of Wuling; / Mustering your fine spirit, / You must also recognise Chan sickness. / Cut off phrases before the wind, / Snatch the handle of the buddhas and patriarchs; / Coming back, boast proudly: / A formidable general is truly fierce.
