Arriving at Liangshan, [the Master] ascended the hall and said: "Beating a cloth drum at the Dragon Gate, shining the light of a firefly before the sun—having reached this point, one truly finds nowhere to hide one's body. Is there anyone here who cannot hold back?"
The Master then said: "In the lion's den of non-arising, the roar terrifies the herd; in the non-dual sandalwood grove, the fragrant breeze encircles the seats. The words truly transcend outer phenomena, the phrases expound the true vehicle, the Way surpasses past and present, and the function exceeds the buddhas and patriarchs. Having arrived here, how could this mountain monk open his mouth? This is what is called seeing what has never been seen, and hearing what has never been heard. Although borrowing the road to pass through, I cannot help playing the fool upon encountering the scene; as in antiquity, so at present, there is neither that nor this. Just now Juehai brought up Jiashan's saying: 'The sun fills the eyes, without a patch of cloud hanging for ten thousand miles. In the limpid water the swimming fish confuses itself. Before my eyes there is no ācārya; here there is no old monk.' If you can know that the clouds and the moon are the same while the streams and mountains are distinct, then you will see that if you only know how to act as a buddha, what sentient beings do you have to worry about? If it is like this, then the three mysteries and three essentials are laid wide open, and the five ranks of lord and vassal are swept away with a single stroke of the brush. Do you all see yet? To stick one's head out beyond the heavens to look, one must be a person of this very realm."
