Ascending the hall, he said, "The trees wither and leaves fall; everywhere the essence is exposed in the autumn wind. The ocean is broad and the sky is high; everywhere the moon is full on the autumn night. The Buddhas and Patriarchs cannot lift it up; the staff and shout cannot be applied. Fresh and rare waters and rocks, an exquisite mind seal, fully revealing the untrammeled crags and cliffs, a lofty and steep gate and court. Settling down to establish a home and delight in one's profession is set aside for now; when the ocean assembly gathers like clouds, how is it? Throwing wide open the doors and windows to welcome them, enduring loneliness with plain rice and coarse broth."
