Ascending the hall for the conclusion of the summer retreat, [the Master] said: "The wondrous, pure, bright mind originally has no lengthening or shortening; how could the true diamond eye have opening or closing? Without the slightest thread being displaced, past and present stand uniquely revealed. Principle follows the changes of phenomena; phenomena fuse in pursuit of principle. Accompanying the mind that acts, corresponding to the capacity of what is known, there are spring, summer, autumn, and winter, arising, abiding, changing, and ceasing. From the unstaying root, all dharmas are established; through effortless functioning, all matters are accomplished. Now, how do you say a single phrase that accords with conditions yet remains unchanging? The autumn wind blows across the eight extremities; the leaves fall, revealing the thousand mountains." He stepped down from the seat.
