Ascending the hall, he said: “Flowers bloom and the world arises—those who have reached it know first; leaves fall and autumn is startled—the virtuous and wise awaken early. How much more so when wild geese cast shadows across the Xiang riverbank and crickets sing their weaving song: clearly seasons shift and times move, distinctly stars speed and lightning flashes. Right at such a time, for those whose mechanisms have dropped away, the ten thousand dharmas are fundamentally at leisure; for those who still retain sight and hearing, Chang'an is in clamour. If you can skillfully observe the season, cut off the vital ford, stand toweringly transcending sages and surpassing ordinaries, and ride every sound and cover every color—how do you speak a phrase of immediate peace on the spot? A person of resolve begrudges the short days; a sorrowful person knows the night is long.”
