On the first day of the eighth month, [the Master] ascended the hall and said: "The autumn light is pure and clear, distinctly non-retrogressing; the multitude of trees is sparse and bare, each and every one a path of liberation. Without leaving the skandhas and dhātus, one can universally traverse the King of Floating Banners; without establishing a single speck of dust, one can fully possess the diamond wisdom. How much more so when the vegetables in the garden are green and the grain in the fields is ripe—is this not a plentiful harvest, harmonious times, the mind melted and the surroundings serene? And how do you speak a phrase that does not depart from toward and away? In the starry river of autumn, a single wild goose; at the fulling block in the night, a thousand homes."
