At the beginning of the retreat, [the master] ascended the hall: "A Buddha-regulation from two thousand years ago, followed as a precedent in all quarters: for ninety days one is at ease, together making a ghost's livelihood. And what is a ghost's livelihood? A monkey entering a cloth bag." He further said, "For ninety days tie up the mouth of the bag; / Abide peacefully in the path of liberation. / Water and milk naturally blend together; / The myriad conditions cause no disturbance. / Quickly swallow the chestnut burr; / Boldly leap through the diamond cage. / Together penetrate, for the patched-robed monks, / The single aperture on the crown of the head."
